Complexity in balancing conservation and tourism in protected areas

As Protected Areas (PAs) expand and the popularity of PA tourism continues to grow, the need to balance conservation and tourism will remain critical. The successful management of PAs will be challenged by overtourism, the unequal representation of stakeholders, inequitable benefit-sharing, funding issues, and even crises such as COVID-19.

Protected areas are implemented for biodiversity conservation, often providing habitat and protection from hunting for threatened and endangered species. Protection helps maintain ecological processes that cannot survive in most intensely managed landscapes and seascapes.

This article addresses the complexity of balancing conservation and tourism in protected areas (PAs). It discusses the expansion of PAs for biodiversity conservation and the simultaneous rise in ecotourism opportunities, highlighting the challenges in maintaining a balance between conservation and economic development through tourism. The study suggests management improvements for PAs, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on tourism. It also explores the relationship between PAs and Sustainable Development Goals.
