Tourism has a chance to make a fresh start from a nearly clean slate. A well-balanced recovery should be the basis of a New Global Tourism Magna Carta.

The PATA Issues & Trends article “Finding the Right Balance” from February 1999 identifies 21 issues and trends that will shape the future of travel and tourism. The overarching theme is achieving a balance that will lead to sustainable development within the industry. Key topics include the economic impact of tourism, the extension of U.S. cultural and business influences, the challenges of globalization, environmental concerns, and the rise of technology in travel. The report also touches on issues like employment within the industry, safety concerns, organized crime’s influence, and the emergence of new markets. It suggests that successful adaptation to these trends will be crucial for the industry’s growth in the 21st century.
